Goriska Brda Wine Region

"Slovenia's Tuscany" — rolling hills, world-class wines, unforgettable tastings

A Wine Lover's Paradise

Goriska Brda is Slovenia's premier wine region, producing world-class wines from indigenous grape varieties. The rolling hills at the crossroads of the Julian Alps and Adriatic Sea create a unique microclimate perfect for winemaking.

The region shares the same terroir with Italy's Collio DOC — the border is invisible and freely crossable. Key grapes include Rebula (the queen of the region), Malvasia, Pinela, and Zelen.

Pro tip: Most boutique wineries operate by appointment only. Book 2+ weeks ahead in peak season. Hiring a private driver (€220-350/day) is strongly recommended given the winding hill roads.

Practical Tips for Food & Drink Lovers

Make the most of your culinary adventure in Nova Gorica

Book in Advance

Michelin-starred restaurants like Dam and Hiša Franko require reservations well ahead. For Dam, Wednesday offers best availability. For Hiša Franko, book 2-4 months in advance.

Wine Appointments

Most boutique wineries in Brda operate by appointment only. Book at least 2 weeks ahead in peak season (May-October). Klet Brda is the exception — no reservation needed.

Hire a Driver

Slovenia has strict drinking-and-driving laws. For wine tours, hire a private driver (€220-350/day) or join an organized tour. The winding hill roads also make driving challenging.

Great Value

Nova Gorica offers exceptional value. Dam's €95 tasting menu with a Michelin star is 30-50% cheaper than comparable experiences in Western Europe. Casual dining starts from €10-15 per person.

Cross the Border

Nova Gorica borders Gorizia, Italy. Schengen means seamless crossing. Experience both sides — Italian aperitivo culture, Slovenian wine, and the unique blend of both culinary traditions.

E-Bike the Vineyards

E-bikes are the best way to explore Goriska Brda. The terrain is hilly, so e-bikes are essential for casual riders. Kontrabant offers guided wine safaris (€70-130).

Try Local Specialties

Don't leave without trying Soča trout, štruklji (walnut dumplings), frtalja (herb omelette), local prosciutto, and the indigenous wines Rebula and Pinela.

Opening Hours

Many restaurants close between lunch and dinner (typically 3pm-6pm). Fine dining spots like Dam are only open Wed-Sat evenings. Always check hours before visiting.
