GO! Christmas Run — Run or Walk for Burlo's Children

There was no starting pistol, no ranking, no finish time worth remembering — and that was entirely the point. When the GO! Christmas Run set off from Via Garibaldi, in front of the Verdi Theatre in the heart of Gorizia, it did so as a deliberately non-competitive gathering: a run and walk open to absolutely everyone, organised free of charge and on a fully non-profit basis, with one shared finish line that mattered — support for the young patients of the IRCCS Burlo Garofolo.

Participants chose between two routes of 5 and 10 kilometres, both starting and finishing beneath the theatre's arcades. Runners pushed the pace; walkers, families with strollers, children and people with disabilities took the morning at their own rhythm. The event was wheelchair accessible by design, because the organisers — the Gorizia Running Club — built it around a simple idea: solidarity should not require a certain stride.

A Capital of Culture, a Community in Motion

The Christmas Run was part of the programme of GO! 2025, which saw Nova Gorica and Gorizia hold the title of European Capital of Culture — the first truly cross-border Capital of Culture in the history of the title. All year long, the two cities used culture to dissolve a border that once divided them; fittingly, the year's festive season closed with an event that asked people to cross not just streets, but the distance between themselves and others.

In that spirit, the run promoted more than sport. It was framed as an act of community participation — the kind of borderless, intergenerational gathering that the GO! 2025 programme championed from Europa Square, where the two cities meet, to the streets of the old town.

Every Registration Was a Donation

The event's most distinctive mechanic was also its most radical: there was no entry fee at all. Registration consisted of a donation to the Burlo Garofolo Foundation — any amount, chosen freely by each participant, made directly through the Foundation's website. The donation itself served as the bib number. Nobody was priced out; everybody gave what they could.

All proceeds went to "Io Corro per il Burlo" ("I Run for the Burlo"), the Fondazione Burlo Garofolo's solidarity campaign that turns participation in sporting events into concrete support for the IRCCS Burlo Garofolo in Trieste — the maternal and children's hospital founded in 1856, recognised as a national research institute (IRCCS) in 1968, and a WHO Collaborating Centre for Maternal and Child Health since 1992. Funds raised through the campaign help improve services, research and care dedicated to the hospital's youngest patients and their families.

The People Behind the Morning

The GO! Christmas Run was organised by the Gorizia Running Club, with the support of the Fondazione Burlo Garofolo, the Farmacie Comunali di Gorizia, FISH FVG — the federation promoting sport for people with disabilities — and the Municipality of Gorizia, which granted municipal patronage. It was a coalition typical of this border region: a grassroots sports club, a hospital foundation, local pharmacies, a disability-sport federation and the city itself, all pulling in the same direction.

What the morning proved is that a charity event does not need spectacle to matter. It needs a route people can actually walk, a cause they can trust, and a barrier to entry low enough that generosity — not athleticism — becomes the ticket in.
