01 — Arrival
How to get there
Brda sits on the Slovenian–Italian border, closer to three countries' airports than to most capitals.
Airports

- Venice (VCE)~1 h 45
Shuttles and rentals at all three; pre-book a transfer if you land after dark.
By car
From Italy, leave the A34/E70 at Gorizia; from Slovenia, take the H4 toward Nova Gorica and follow signs for Brda. The last fifteen minutes are ridge roads between the vines — drive them slowly.
By train + bus
The Bohinj line stops at Nova Gorica station, 20 minutes away. Local buses run from there to Dobrovo and Šmartno a few times daily — check return times before you settle into a tasting.
By bike
From Gorizia or Nova Gorica you can cross the border on two wheels — several smaller crossings are effectively bike-and-foot only, and the climb into the hills is half the point.

Where to stay
Nothing here is a chain. Book directly with the family — you will get the better room and the better stories.

04 — Wheels
Bike rental
The hills are honest. An e-bike makes them polite.
E-bike rentals
Rental points in Dobrovo and Šmartno carry fleets of e-bikes with helmets, locks and route maps. Reserve a day ahead in June and September.
Delivery to your stay
Most services deliver bikes to your guesthouse or farm stay and collect them after — just mention your village when booking.
05 — Cellars
Wine tasting
Brda tastings are conversations, not counters. Give each cellar an hour.
Book ahead
Family wineries are working farms — a message the day before means someone is actually in the cellar when you arrive. Large estates take walk-ins in season.
Languages
Slovenian, English and Italian everywhere; German at most established cellars. Wine vocabulary travels further than grammar.

Four kitchens worth planning a day around. Book for dinner — everyone else had the same idea.

08 — Parking
Parking
Villages are for walking. Cars wait at the edge.
Village parking
Šmartno is car-free inside the walls — use the signed lot below the gate (free, 3 min walk). Dobrovo has two lots by the castle and the cooperative cellar; Medana and Biljana have small free lots at the village entrances. Nothing costs more than patience in August.
E-bike charging
Charging points at the Dobrovo trailhead, the Šmartno gate lot and most rental partners. Wineries along the marked routes will usually top you up if you stop for a tasting.

11 — Two countries
Cross-border travel
The border runs through the vineyards. The vines never noticed.
Schengen
Slovenia and Italy are both Schengen — crossings at Brda are open roads with a sign and a flag, no barriers.
Bring ID anyway
Carry a passport or EU ID card — spot checks happen, and you will want it for wine shipments and hotel check-ins.
Italian side trips
Gorizia's old town is 15 minutes, Cormòns' wine bars 20, Cividale's UNESCO center 25. Lunch in Italy, sunset in Slovenia is a legitimate plan.
12 — Tread lightly
Stay on the marked trails. Book the small producers directly. Remember that the postcard is somebody’s workplace — respect the working landscape, and it will keep welcoming you back.

13 — FAQ
Quick answers
It helps, but it is not mandatory. Buses link Nova Gorica with Dobrovo and Šmartno, and e-bikes cover everything else. Many visitors do the whole trip on two wheels plus one pre-booked transfer from the airport.
